This is the forerunner of the modern sportbike, ie "crotch rocket". The design, oddly enough, was done in Germany by Hans Muth and his crew. They were given carte blanche on the design as an exercise. The name Katana comes from a Japanese Sword that was supposed to strike mortal fear into anyone who saw it unsheathed. It was enormously successful based only on the style, not the function. Sort of like a Harley.
