In 1994 Harley debuted a superbike to compete against the Ducatis and Japanese bikes in AMA Superbike racing. Although improved over the years at a huge expense, they never made it to the top. About 25 of these bikes were made. this particular bike was raced by Jordan Szoke in 2001, a year in which he was the top privateer racer, beating one of the two Harley factory racers. Harley quit superbike racing at the end of 2001. The VR-1000 was the prototype for the V-Rod which Harley now sells.
