1968 Lotus 56 Turbine Indy Car

1968 Lotus 56 Turbine Indy Car One of four such cars built by Calin Chapman's Lotus Cars of Norwich, England for STP's Andy Granatelli, the number 70 Lotus 56 Turbine Indy car, financed in part by Firestone, is a technically advanced, gas turbine powered, four wheel drive creation with mechanical and aerodynamic features well beyond the normal thinking of the Indy car set. The car swept to pole position while setting new one lap and four lap qualifying records at the Brickyard, averaging 171.900 MPH on it's blistering four lap run.

Driven by veteran Joe Leonard and set up by Parnelli Jones, this particular car was the class of the Field at the 1968 500, however while comfortably leading the way with only eight laps to go before receiving the coveted checkered flag, the car suffered a fuel pump drive failure and was relagated to a disappointing 12th place.
