The 375 Indy is the first in a series of large-engined 12 cylinder cars that, beginning in 1951, established Ferrari's preeminence in Grand Prix racing, in 1952 Enzo
Ferrari decided to try this luck on this side of the Atlantic, adapting four cars specifically to compete in the celebrated indianapolis 500 race. This is one of those cars. Alas, the 375 Indy proved less suited to the demands of American racing tha to the European
Formula One and
Ferrari and never again competed at the " brickyard".
The 375 Indy is a handsome and understated car. The one expensive touch is the front grill: open-mouthed and rimmed with chrome, it seems to reach forward greedily to gulp in the air that was necessary to cool the car's large engine. Further back the upper air vent is more elegantly proportioned and sculpted to make a visual transition between the main grill and the narrow windscreen. The open wheel design also allows us to admine the clear articulation and superb craftsmanship of the car's suspension.
Engine: 60", V-12, 4494 cc. 390 horsepower
