The
Ferrari Daytona was introduced at the Paris Salon as a berlinetta (coupe) in 1968; the spyder debuted at Frankfurt in October 1969. The berlinetta displayed in Pans was the third Daytona designed by Carrozzeria Pininfarina and the first to use Ferrari’s new V-12 4.4-liter engine: It was Ferrari’s most expensive ($19,000+) and fastest (174 mph) road car to-date.
The 1968 Berlinetta prototype was the only Daytona build by Pininfarina; the production cars were produced by Carrozzeria Scaglietti. Ferrari’s aggressive oval grille design had become a very recognizable styling characteristic for competition cars, especially on the 250 MM, 340 Mexico, 250 GTO, 250 GTB Lusso and the 275 GTB series.
Sergio Pininfarina and his staff departed from this oval grille tradition with the Daytona’s sharp, thin lines. Pininfarina created the most dramatic styling change in Ferrari’s 21 - year- history, more than 1,300 Daytonas were sold between 1968 and 1973.
