The
Chevrolet Camaro Concept brings together eye-catching design and thrilling performance, updating one of the most popular coupes in history for a new generation of enthusiasts. The latest incarnation of this classic model now boasts a fuel-efficient power train, modern design and an elaborate chassis.
The latest
Chevrolet remains a concept car at this stage, with the manufacturer looking to gauge opinions on the new version. The short deck, wide base and long hood of the Camaro Concept leave the observer in little doubt that this is a powerful sports car with exceptional performance. The statistics tell the full story: the car comes with a 400 bhp, V8 engine, 6-speed manual gearbox and an elaborate chassis with independent suspension for each of the Camaro’s four wheels.
Despite its sporting pedigree, the Camaro Concept can be used as an everyday vehicle, with fuel-saving technology in the form of “Active Fuel Management” cylinder deactivation. In practice, fuel economy of over 30 mpg can be achieved in motorway driving.
Design
Wishing to emulate the performance heritage of the Camaro range, the GM team, which designed the latest model, have produced a shape which, whilst retaining elements of the past, looks boldly forward to the future. Design director, Tom Peters, explains: “The overall proportions, long hood and powerful fender forms say, ‘This is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive performance vehicle.’ ” The unmistakeable front grille and enormous hood bulge hint at the performance capabilities of the V8 engine, whilst the large wheels and tyres with exposed brakes point to the speed of the Camaro Concept.
Performance
The 6.0 litre LS2 Corvette-inspired engine features an aluminium block, and is lightweight in construction. The Active Fuel Management system is capable of closing down four of the car’s cylinders when the engine is under a light load. The 6-speed manual gearbox offers a wide range of ratios, allowing for rapid acceleration from standstill, superb overtaking performance and frugal motorway cruising.
An American Classic
The Camaro first appeared in the mid-1960s, capturing the optimism of the Baby Boomer generation and the dissemination of American culture throughout the globe. The Camaro was a true American icon, bringing high-quality style to a vast audience. Its eye-catching shape and stunning lines were reminiscent of the Gran Turismo and Corvette cars of the era, whilst its performance line-up included the Z-28 small block and the big block 396s and 427s.
The mass-market release of the first model saw
Chevrolet sell almost 700,000 units in the first three years of production. Put quite simply – for each Z-28 on the racetrack, there were many thousands of
Chevrolet Camaros doing the shopping, taking the kids on holiday and visiting friends.
