This compact, lightweight, yet powerful engine was recognized in May 2006 by a panel of automative journalists from 29 countries as the "inter-national Engine of the Year" in the 2.0-liter to 2.5-liter category, outscoring the
BMW 2.5-liter engine.
With the addition of a secondary air injection system and combustion
chamber modifications environmental performance has improved, as
well as engine response in low speed driving ranges.
In Forester 2.5XT and Impreza WRX models, this engine produces 224 horsepower @ 5,600 RPM, for Legacy 2.5 GT Limited and Outback 2.5 XT Limited models, the engine develops 243 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM. In WRX STI models, power increases to 293 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM.
