1982 Formula One cars: Some basic specifications

Formula One cars Some basic 1982 specifications The "rule book" defining Formula One cars published by the FIA is long and complex. Finding ways to achieve maximum performance within the rules keeps Formula One constructors busy year-round, from season to season, from race to race. While other forms of racing cars may have greater acceleration or top speed, Formula One cars are meant to be (and are) the quickest in completing a circuit composed of "normal" roads with left and right hands turns without banking - "road circuits" as opposed to aval "tracks". And unlike "track" racing Formula One goes on rain or shine.

WEIGHT: Not less than 585 kg (1287 pounds), without driver or fuel.
Ballast allowoble.
ENGINE TYPE: 4 stroke reclprocting piston engine required.
MAXIMUM ENGINE CAPACITY:
3,000 cc normally aspirated (180 cubic inches).
1,500 cc forced induction (90 cubic inches).
MAXIMUM NO. OF CYLINDERS: 12.
NO. OF WHEELS: Minimum 4.
COACHWORK: Maximum overall width (with wheels) = 215cm./Maximum width ahead of front wheels = 150cm./Maximum width between wheels = 140 cm/Maximum width behind rear wheels = 110 cm./Maximum height = 90 cm (excluding roll bar).
SUSPENSION: Some springing medium required between wheels and chassis/body unit.
GROUND CLEARANCE: Minimum 6cm.
REAR AERODYNAMIC DEVICE (WING):
Maximum width: 110 cm/Maximum distance from rear wheel centers: 80cm.
STARTER: On board source of energy capable of starting the car at least twice. External energy source for starting in the grid and in the pits allowed.
OIL: No oil replenishment allowed during the race.
RESERVE GEAR: Required.
BRAKES: Two separate circuits operated by the same pedal.
WHEELS: Must be external to the coachwork, maximum width 18 inches, maximum diameter 26 inches.
FIRE EXTINGUSHERS: Driver's compartment minimum capacity: 5kg/Engine compartment minimum capacity. 2.5 kg.
MASTER SWITCH: Spark proof circuit brecker readily available to driver - and externally:
LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: Medical air bottle connected to driver's helmet by flame resistant pipe required.
FUEL: Petrol (pump fuel) maximum 102 RON (research octane number).
FUEL TANKS: Maximum capacity 250 litres.
Approved rubber bladder construction required.
