The
Pontiac Solstice GXP has always received passionate plaudits from customers, from its motor show introduction in 2002 to its release for pre-order, selling one thousand vehicles in the first 41 minutes. The manufacturer is now moving to the next level of styling, performance and excitement with the development of the turbo-charged GXP version for 2007.
Turbo-charged 2.0 litre engine
The Solstice GXP is powered by an Ecotec 2.0 litre turbo-charged engine, the first direct injection model to be released in North America by GM. The GXP represents a new specific output record for a GM engine – 260 bhp and 260 lb/ft of torque. At 2.1 bhp per cubic inch (130 bhp/litre), it is the best-performing engine in the Ecotec range.
The combination of lightweight turbine and dual-scroll turbo-charger produces an instant response from the engine. This is further supported by the Solstice GXP’s air-to-air intercooling, reducing the temperature of the air passing through the inlets. The turbo-charger is complemented by dual cam phasing, resulting in optimised valve timing at the lower end of the car’s rpm range. As a result, the turbo is highly responsive and torque is achieved quickly.
The introduction of a direct injection system furnishes the Ecotec engine with even more power, yet maintains the more economical fuel consumption figures normally associated with lower capacity port-injected engines. The direct injection setup delivers fuel straight to the combustion chamber, facilitating a more efficient burning of the fuel/air mix. The equivalent bhp of a conventional injection engine is thus achieved with less fuel – particularly noticeable at lower speeds.
The Solstice GXP’s engine is controlled by a 5-speed manual gearbox, although automatic 5-speed transmission is available as an option. Both setups achieve a 0-60 mph time of just less than 5.5 seconds.
Equipment
The incorporation of the Solstice into the GXP range adds a range of standard features which distinguish it from the base model. The GXP version carries unique fascias, both front and rear, and boasts a polished, dual-outlet exhaust. StabiliTrak stability enhancement is also included as standard, and interior changes include the distinctive GXP instrument cluster and Cobalt Red stitching on the seats.
Standard features aside, the GXP also offers a myriad of optional extras. Sports suspension and anti-lock disc brakes on all four wheels can be added, along with electric windows, mirrors and locks with keyless entry. Cruise control and a full leather-covered steering wheel are available, as are a high-tech driver information centre and 18-in. aluminium polished alloys.
Other minor refinements are available, including an upgraded audio system with XM satellite radio, OnStar, leather seats, rear deck spoiler, metallic “sports” pedals and chrome wheels.
The 2007
Pontiac Solstice GXP goes on sale in the autumn of 2006. A pricing structure is yet to be announced.
