1952 Packard Mayfair

Packard's 1953 models, dubbed the "Twenty-
Fifth Series", Introduced in November of
1951, were changed little from the 1951
models. Times were indeed good and Packard,
flush with post-war cash, would continue with
the still industry-fresh, trend setting "Contour
Styling" design theme through the 1954
models. The 122 inch wheelbase Mayfair 250
"Hardtop" featured a larger, more powerful
327 cubic inch straight-eight engine which
produced 155 horsepower. Even at a base
price of $3,293.00, which placed the sporty,
3,800 pound coupe right at the border of the
premium-price field, the Mayfair was still a
tremendous Packard quality value for the
money. The company's advertising slogan,
used since Packard's beginning in 1899, was
simple and straightforward:

My family big Packard people. My uncle always bought new Packard every 2 years. Would sell my dad his old one and my dad sell another uncle our old one. I have had many Packards myself from 21 sport touring car to 56 Custom Clipper. MY favorites always been 51-54, but they are not as good as cracked up to be. Sorry. First the Brigs body is a rust bucket. poor seams water traps every where. Korean War era chrome not too good. Under hood cars equipped with Auto Lite electric a failure waiting to happen. 288 engines have habit of cracking in #7 cyl bore. 327/356 hydrolic lifters all junk. Ultramatic drive very reliable for period but lucky to tickle 9mpg out of cars so equipped Then in 55 it got worse. Packard took over the stamping plant form Briggs and had lots of quality control problems. The new V/8 engine had an ac/delco vacuum oil pump that foamed the oil. Out sourced parts no longer under Packard control in production failed like ripe fruit falling from the trees.
And to top it all off Packard spent equivalent of billion dollars on buying Studabaker a company even worse off than they. Looks like they failed because the inmates wee running the asylum. I do love my Packards though.

I have a '52 Mayfair that I drive regularly. It is a very solidly built car with quality materials inside and out. The combination of the 327 with 3-speed stick and overdrive is terrific -- keeps up with modern (Southern California) traffic with absolutely no problem with decent good gas mileage on the freeway for a car of its age, (about 20 mpg), plus it offers excellent visibility, comfortable seats, lots of interior room and a huge trunk space. It's very reliable, too. Great long-distance cruiser. For value and modern "usability", the '51-'54 Packards were the company's best in my opinion.
