2006 Mazda RX-8

Mazda RX-8 For 2006, the Mazda RX-8 is available in two variants: a 6-speed manual producing 232 bhp, or a 6-speed automatic producing 212 bhp, the latter boasting Formula 1-style paddle shifters. Both variants are equipped with electric mirrors, door locks and windows, an outstanding six-speaker AM/FM/CD system and cruise control.

The Shinka Special Edition

The Mazda RX-8 Shinka edition is named after the Japanese for “transformation”, adding luxury to the standard RX-8’s sportiness. With the extra option of the new 6-speed Sport automatic transmission, it comes with highly tuned suspension for optimised performance. It also comes with leather seat surfaces and handbrake lever, and modified 18-inch alloys. SIRIUS satellite radio is fitted, and one year’s subscription is included.

RENESIS technology

The new RX-8 RENESIS (Rotary Engine GENESIS) is the culmination of 40 years’ racing experience, featuring many elements of the RX-7 – the most successful vehicle in IMSA history, and winner of the 1991 Le Mans 24-hour race. The RX-8 continues this racing tradition, featuring in the Grand Am Cup and Pro Formula Mazda competitions among others. The engine is incredibly smooth and revs are high (up to 9,000 rpm), yet its footprint is 60% smaller than a comparable V6.

The RENESIS engine features side intake and exhaust outlets with significantly more area than other rotary engines. This improves engine efficiency, allowing Mazda to do away with the forced induction which featured on the RX-7. Whilst the RX-8’s 1.3 litre engine may seem unimpressive in comparison with other engines in its class. Yet the rotary powerplant, 3-stage intake and electronic throttle allow the RENESIS engine to produce plenty of straight-line power.

The low, far back positioning of the engine lowers the RX-8’s centre of gravity, improving the vehicle’s equilibrium and balance. The fact that the fuel tank is located behind the rear axle also contributes to this balance, producing a 50/50 ratio, front and rear.

Styling

The Mazda RX-8 is characterised by tight, sharp lines, giving the car a muscular, athletic shape. The unique Mazda logo is emblazoned throughout the exterior, featuring on the front, the headlamps, rear bumper and hood. Its dimensions are almost exactly the same as those of the Porsche 911, yet the RX-8 can comfortably house four adults, even offering room for a child seat.

The Mazda logo can be found inside the cabin too – on the seats, the console, the handbrake and the gearshift lever. The interior reflects the quality and design of the RX-8, featuring ergonomically designed seats to improve driver posture and reduce tiredness, as well as offering maximum support. The same user-friendly motive lies behind the soft blue lighting on the instrument panel, minimizing eyestrain.
