2006 Ford Reflex

Ford Reflex Ford’s new Reflex concept is a reflection of the manufacturer’s awareness of the increasing trend for downsizing in the US market. It is a sporty coupe which has been dubbed the “new Puma” or the “new Probe”, and it has been designed by Peter Horbury, the Briton who is now in charge of Ford’s US design arm.

Besides the obvious spectacular butterfly-opening doors, the Ford Reflex includes a number of innovative design elements. It is equipped with a hybrid electric-diesel engine, delivering up to 65 mpg. The regular, front-mounted diesel engine is supported by a rear-axle electric motor, providing a four-wheel drive setup. The motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries which store the otherwise dissipated energy created under braking. Energy efficiency is taken one step further by the front and rear lamps which boast solar panels. The energy from these panels is used not only to power the lamps, but also to recharge the batteries. The Reflex boasts solar-powered fans which automatically cool the car when parked in sunlight. Like the Mazda Kabura, excess material from the manufacture of Nike trainers is employed as sound insulation.

Whilst the Reflex is effectively a two-seater sports car, it also features a single, large seat to the rear, adequate for one adult or two small children. A divider can be raised at the touch of a button should the third seat need to be split into two smaller ones. An integrated child car seat is also included, and is rear-facing for maximum safety. In order that the driver can still see the occupant, Ford have included a camera which transmits images of the child to the front. Other safety features include side curtain airbags, and a brand new inflatable seatbelt which boasts its own airbag.

Interior innovations

The Ford reflex features a cabin designed in light, modern synthetic materials, and both wood and leather are conspicuous by their absence. Red and white hues are used to keep the interior bright. A transparent mesh material is used to cover the seats, ensuring continuous air flow. A number of functions are at the driver’s fingertips via an LCD touch screen, helping to reduce the usual clutter of switches and levers. The gearbox is controlled by subtle paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

From consumer electronics to urban dwellings, small is becoming big in America", says designer Peter Horbury. "The bold and innovative design of Reflex stretches the traditional boundaries of a subcompact car. Reflex delivers the fuel economy and flexibility that Americans have come to expect."

Freeman Thomas, a colleague of Horbury’s, adds: "Ford Reflex is a small car that doesn't feel small. It is a gorgeous sporty car that delivers guilt-free performance with a hybrid engine. And, thanks to its innovative approach to the interior, it has space for growing families."
