Inspecting and Replacing Your BMW Brake Pad

The BMW continues to be a very popular vehicle choice. The symbol of the famous Germany company is recognized worldwide. These classy, high performance vehicles are also very reliable. However, you may find that you enjoy driving your BMW so much that you eventually need to replace your BMW brake pad. You need to learn when to replace your BMW brake pad as safety should take precedence over everything else.

Visual Inspection

Experts recommend visually inspecting the condition of your BMW brake pads at least once every 6 months. You should check your front and rear BMW brake pad for wear that is uneven, as well as any tears or cracks in the friction surface. The brake pad contact point also needs to be visually examined for any possible defects. If you detect any defects or notice that the brake pad lining has worn to less than ¼ inch, you need to replace your brake pads immediately. Worn or defective brake pads pose a severe safety risk as your ability to stop in an emergency is greatly diminished.
Aural Inspection

Another way to detect possible wear of your BMW brake pad is by listening carefully to any unusual sounds. If you hear anything that sounds of the ordinary when you are braking, you need to have your brake pads inspected. You may detect a squeaking noise which often indicates that your brake pads are either loose or worn. Try cleaning your brake pads if you start hearing unusual noises as they may just be dirty and covered with dust or dirt. If at any point you start to hear a grinding noise when braking, head immediately to your nearest repair shop!

Brake Pad Sensors

Some BMW models are equipped with computerized brake pad sensors that are also known as break wear indicators. These innovative sensors automatically warn drivers when their BMW brake pads are starting to wear below the desired thickness and need to be replaced. Brake pad sensors should always be replaced at the same time as the brake pads.

Replacing Brake Pads

If you are concerned about possible damage or wear to your BMW brake pad, you should consult a BMW professional. These individuals will be able to conduct a much more thorough inspection of your brake pad than you could do yourself. They will inform you if the brake pad needs to be replaced. This can cost save you a lot of money if you detect the problem early, not to mention the fact that it could end up saving your life!
