The BMW Z4 Roadster represents the high-performance version of the well-known Z4 Roadster. The ultra-sports BMW M segment first moved into the roadster family in 1997, with the production of the Z3 M Roadster which sold over 15,000 models up to 2002.
The Z4 M Roadster M is equipped with BMW M’s straight-six engine, a power unit which won “Engine of the Year” award in 2005 for the fifth time in a row – an unparalleled achievement. The unit develops an exceptional amount of thrust and its performance figures speak for themselves: 6 cylinders, 3.2-lites, 269 lb/ft at 4,900 rpm and 343 bhp at 7,900 rpm (8,000 rpm maximum).
It is perhaps the specific output statistics which say more about the performance capabilities of the engine, with 106 bhp per litre and a power-t-weight ration of 4.1 kg/bhp. In practice, this converts to a 0-60 mph capability of 5.0 seconds. The Z4 M Roadster’s top speed is limited artificially to 155 mph.
The high sped engine is combined with short transmission ratios to allow for the optimal conversion of engine power to rear wheel thrust. The 6-speed manual gearbox is married to the M final drive, fulfilling this optimisation requirement to the full. The result is crisp shift movement, exceptionally smooth running and highly sensitive driver feedback to ensure the efficient use of the finely tuned gear system.
The engineering quality of the Z4 M Roadster is reflected perfectly by its exterior design, boasting a number of features which distinguish it from the basic Z4 Roadster model. The most obvious of these are the X-shaped front air dam with its array of lines and openings, the huge air intakes, the dual lines on the engine lid and the low-slung grille. The 18-inch aluminium wheels, featuring a double-spoke design, are an exclusive feature of the Z4 M Roadster. The rear end is also sculpted in the traditional M style, signified by the four exhaust pipes and cross diffuser.
Inside the Z4 M Roadster, the driver will find a pure, sporting and highly exclusive ambience. The cabin is adorned with high-quality materials in clearly defined shapes. The specific BMW M colour scheme can be seen on the speedometer and rev counter – both finished n black with white numbers and red needles, bathed in white illumination.
Outside, the BMW Z4 M Roadster is available in a range of five paint colours, allowing each owner to customise his or her model with a special personal feel. The choice of four interior colours extends the customisation possibilities, and includes two leather trim options with varying levels of leather available, as well as three Z4 M Roadster-exclusive trim surfaces.
