At first sight, it is clear that the BMW Z4 M Coupe is the epitome of pure driving pleasure. The long front section gives a strong impression of power and forward thrust, and in profile the two-door sports machine looks both powerful and dynamic, sporting the traditional “Hofmeister kick” which is a feature of all the brand’s models. The image is further enhanced by the muscular definition provided by the unmistakeable rear wheel arches.
The Z4 M Coupe features the same award-winning, 3.2-litre M engine found in BMW’s M3 and Z4 Roadster models. The performance statistics speak for themselves: 3,246cc, producing 330 bhp output at 7,900 rpm. Around 80% of the engine’s 262 lb/ft of peak torque is at the driver’s command above just 2,000 rpm. These figures add up to a specific output of 103 bhp per litre, and an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of 9.9 lb-bhp. It is capable of achieving 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, with the top speed artificially limited to 155 mph.
The BMW Z4 Coupe matches its impressive output figures with a short transmission ratio, ensuring maximum efficiency in converting its power to optimum power and thrust on the road. Its 6-speed manual gearbox provides exactly this function, with the gearshift range laid out perfectly throughout the engine’s speed range.
The high quality drivetrain and engine of the Z4 M Coupe are supported by its superior suspension set-up. In essence, it is similar to the suspension found on the Roadster version, but has been specially modified to fit the demands of the coupe body. The perfect harmony of all the model’s components is borne out in its racing performance, where it has achieved faster track lap times at the Nurburgring than the Z4 M Roadster and even the M3.
Inside, the BMW Z4 M Coupe integrates modernity in its sporting character with a high standard of sophistication. Its ambience is a fusion of design excellence and practical functionality. The cockpit is entirely driver-orientated, with all controls, panels and instruments situated on or around the steering wheel. The result is an ergonomic atmosphere in which the driver is in total control. There is a range of multi-functional buttons which allow for minimal driver distraction – the telephone and audio systems are one-touch button operated, meaning there is no need to remove hands from the steering wheel.
Production of the BMW Z4 M Coupe began at the brand’s manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in April of 2006, and deliveries commenced just four months later, in August of the same year.
