When a new model comes to the design stage, the most pressing consideration will usually be the number of units which the manufacturer can shift. The resulting design normally pleases a wide range of tastes and age groups.
However, these factors are not a concern for British-based manufacturers TVR, whose smaller client base allows them to take risks with vehicle design. The latest model to come from the TVR production plant in Blackpool is a prime example of this artistic licence – it is a sports car without guidelines, whose form is dictated solely by aerodynamics and creative flair. It is easy to forget that, beneath the stunning design, lies an engine capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.
Exterior styling
The TVR Sagaris features a myriad of vents and air intakes, endowing the model with an exotic, futuristic look. Its shape is that of a traditional sports car, with an elongated bonnet, rear cockpit position and short overhangs, both front and rear. The front spoiler is accentuated by the integrated headlights, whilst the wheel arches house impressive 18-inch, seven-spoke alloys.
Based on the T350, the Sagaris features a number of improvements, including lower ride height, upgraded (if slightly unorthodox) rear diffuser and increased downforce. It also has a wider track – and therefore better grip. The use of carbon fibre in the construction process reduces the kerb weight to a lightweight 1100 kg.
Under the bonnet
The Sagaris model also benefits from an engine upgrade on its T350 predecessor. The latest TVR boasts an aluminium, 4.0 litre, six-cylinder powerhouse, with a redline set at 7,500 rpm. Its power is transferred through a six-speed manual gearbox, and the Sagaris’ 3.6 second 0-100 km/h statistic puts it ahead of the Ferrari 360 Modena, which completes the same test in 4.5 seconds. This exceptional straight-line performance is provided by the engine’s 400 bhp output, as well as the model’s superlative aerodynamics and lightweight design.
The TVR Sagaris is a genuinely quick sports car with a radical look, capable of achieving a top speed of 310 km/h in optimal conditions. The engine, first seen in the Tuscan S, boasts some impressive power statistics: 294kW at 7,000 rpm, with torque peaking at 420Nm at 5250 rpm. The Sagaris’ acceleration puts equivalent Ferrari and Porsche models to shame, whilst its minimalist interior design and futuristic styling make other sports car look dull by comparison.
At around £50,000 (75,000 EUR), the price tag may seem expensive, especially given the extra costs for compliance and exportation, but still represents exceptional value for money compared to the Ferrari 360 Modena, with an asking price of more than double that of the TVR Sagaris.
