2006 Mazda MX-5

Mazda MX-5 In updating the MX-5 for 2006, engineers at Mazda looked to evolve the lightweight roadster concept, facing the challenge of building upon the reputation of a modern sports car icon. In 2000, the Guinness Book of World Records officially recognised the Mazda MX-5 as the best selling two-seater convertible in motoring history, with a total of 531,890 models produced up to May of that year. Today, international sales have topped 700,000 units.

Outside the MX-5

The 2006 model retains many of the features which have made it a record-holder, combining the necessary “fun” factor with updated styling. The most obvious change is the removal of the “cola bottle” curves. The smooth, tapering front and rear remain, but the side panels sweep smoothly between the wheels with none of the old model’s narrowing characteristics. This allows for increased interior space, giving both driver and passenger extra elbow, hip and shoulder room. Space is also freed up to facilitate the installation of side air bags.

Inside the MX-5

The new Mazda MX-5 interior is designed with functionality and comfort in mind, and includes craftsmanship which will please even the most discerning enthusiast. The cockpit is laid out in the classic “T” formation, joining a firm, strong instrument panel and dash to the large tunnel. The four distinctive cabin air vents give the dash a straight, symmetrical character, and the polished black finish covering much of the interior is stylish and distinctive. The positioning of the controls, switches and gauges is precise and careful to ensure maximum functionality. The gauges themselves are surrounded by metal-look trim, and feature clear markings and bold needles behind polarised glass coverings to combat the effect of bright sunlight on visibility.

The new MX-5 is available in a range of eight different body colours and three options for the interior trim. The base model comes with upholstery in black cloth and a silver metallic steering wheel, door handle and instrument panel finish. Upgraded models feature one of two improved trims for the seats, instrument panel and doors: saddle tan and black leather, or monotone black leather.

Engine range

The all-new MX-5 is powered by two new members of the MZR range – a 2.0 litre available globally, and a 1.8 litre available only in Europe. Both engines are compact, lightweight and boast chain-driven double overhead camshafts. They feature four valves per cylinder, electronic port fuel injection, variable intake valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition.

Fine-tuning has been employed to give the new MX-5 a distinctive, harmonic sound, with pitch changing smoothly as throttle increases. Over 5,000 rpm, the engine note rises to a powerful roar as the needle climbs towards the redline at 6,700 rpm. The combination of power and resonance add to the Mazda MX-5’s responsive, nimble, agile drive.
