
Launched at the New York International Show the LF-C luxury sports coupe is the third new concept design from Lexus within a year. The LF-C is the foundation for the new generation IS 300 sports car with the whisper of moving Lexus in a new direction.
"Design is among the most important differentiating factors between any two products and the LF-C expands the current IS 300 sport sedan into a new category previously not addressed in the Lexus line-up," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "The LF-C concept is designed to target an extremely young, affluent buyer with a strong element of surprise."
At a touch of the button, the unique hardtop design transforms from a coupe to a convertible; stowing away compactly into the boot through a minimal rear opening, a design brought forward from the Calty Design Research Centre.
Engineering
A front-mounted V8 engine with a sequential 6-speed automatic gearbox is the driving force behind the LF-C. With its elongated wheelbase of 5.1 inches, the LF-C is only minimally longer than the current IS 300 model, riding 2 inches lower and 5 inches wider, producing a more aggressive car. Yet, its liberal dimensions more than adequately accommodate four adult passengers. The lightweight individual bucket seats convey the image of sport meets elegance.
Using integrated lines, Calty added simplification to the LF-C model. With a distinctive design, the roof rail tapers from front to rear, imitating the sculpted theme of the main framework. The main body shape is tapered, sweeping back to the rear fenders in a show of strength and muscle.
Interior style
A vibrant and fluid centre console runs through the entirety of the interior and the display controls are concealed under a multi-layered transparent surface. The cockpit of the Lexus LF-C Concept gives the impression of sophistication, elegance and style. Arched instrument panels flank the centre console, in a low position, and clearly visible to both driver and passenger to create an atmosphere of openness and space.
A performance rated vehicle, the LF-C has drive by wire steering and a Formula-One-inspired gear transmission and steering wheel. The gauges are positioned along the axis of the steering column, rising all the way up to the base of the windscreen.
"We've known for some time that if Lexus ever prioritized styling the way we have product quality and advanced technology, we would once again change the luxury car playing field," said Clements. "The LF-C is a stunning example of how Lexus will address the future and change it at the same time."
