To use the word “car” to describe the Ferrari 360 Modena would be a massive understatement. The 360 Modena is not a car, it is a racing machine. Cars are about functionality and transportation. The 360 Modena is about pure driving pleasure – 400 bhp, $155,000 of pleasure.
Of course, this description could be used for most Ferraris. In fact, the 360 Modena is the closest thing to a practical, useable super car that the Italian manufacturers have ever produced. In this model, Ferrari have addressed issues such as interior space, overall comfort and ergonomics. The addition of automatic transmission makes this the first Ferrari mid-engine super car which can be used for everyday driving.
The range
The 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena is available in two body styles: the classy “Berlinetta” variant (hard top), and the sporty “Spider” (convertible) model. Both come with the option of a traditional six-speed manual transmission, or a semi-auto gearbox, also six-speed. Fully automatic models are also offered, with their own “F1” designation. The name comes from the 360 Modena’s steering column-mounted, paddle-shift gear system, similar to that used by Michael Schumacher in the manufacturer’s Formula 1 car.
The exact range therefore comprises four models: the 360 Modena (c.$145,000), the 360 Modena F1 (c.$155,000), the 360 Spider(c.$160,000) and the 360 Spider F1 (c.$170,000).
Engineering
The 360 Modena represents a blank canvas design, pointing the way to the future for Ferrari road cars. Features include reduced weight and increased chassis rigidity – objectives which seem to be in contrast to those previously achieved. The 360 Modena is the first Ferrari which has been built entirely of aluminium. The lightweight metal is used for the super car’s chassis, wishbone suspension and body shell, equipping the 360 Modena with supreme overall performance and handling. The comfort levels are exceptional for this class of car.
The 360 Modena’s engine is a 400 bhp V8, with maximum power output achieved at the redline – 8500 rpm. The combination of lightweight construction and powerful engine room produces a peak torque of 275 lb/ft (at 4750 rpm). All these factors come together to propel the 360 Modena from 0-62 mph in just 4.5 seconds, accelerating to a maximum speed of 180 mph.
Each vehicle is sold with a huge list of standard features including air conditioning, electrically powered mirrors, locks and windows (as one might expect for the price). AM/FM stereo CD and full leather seats also come as standard. In the Spider variant, the convertible top is powered. Safety features include traction control, twin airbags and an ABS system to counteract the engine’s undeniable power. Optional extras are limited – only the interior and exterior paint colours can be modified.
